Description

Join Pearl for our Workshop Series - Handbuild a Mug  and spend a cozy, creative session making your very own ceramic mug from scratch. This 2.5-hour workshop is a welcoming introduction to hand-building techniques and is perfect for beginners, as well as those with some clay experience who want focused time to create a functional piece.

What to expect

You’ll arrive to a prepared workstation stocked with clay and tools, then be guided step-by-step through building a mug using hand-building techniques such as slab, coil, or pinch pot construction. We’ll also explore different styles of handles and how to attach them securely.

Once your mug has dried a bit, you’ll use underglaze to decorate your piece, adding color, patterns, or personal details. After class, we’ll let the mugs dry fully, then fire them in the kiln. Each mug will be dipped in a clear glaze and fired again, giving it a smooth, food-safe finish.

Finished mugs will be ready for pickup in 3–4 weeks. Ceramics is a wonderfully unpredictable art form - while most pieces make it through the firing process beautifully, occasional cracks or kiln surprises can happen due to the nature of the materials.

Whether you come solo, with a friend, or as a small group, this workshop is a relaxed, low-pressure way to slow down, get your hands muddy, and create something you’ll actually use.

What to bring

All ceramic materials and tools are provided. We recommend bringing an apron (we have a few available in-studio) or wearing clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy. Water, coffee, and tea will be available, and you’re welcome to bring another non-alcoholic beverage if you’d like.

Weather

We love ceramics—but we love safety more! If the weather isn’t cooperating, we will postpone the workshop and notify participants by email to reschedule.

Minimum registration

This workshop requires a minimum of four participants to proceed.

Please note

Pearl does not have access to internet service—we find it creates a more focused, creative atmosphere. You’re welcome to step outside the studio if you need to access service during the workshop.
